Keilir is a tuff mountain, which means that it is made entirely out of consolidated ash. It was made in a volcanic eruption under ice. Fishermen in Sandgerði hve for a long time used the mountain to guide them into the harbor.
What's to see?
Keilir is one of the Reykjanes Peninsula most noticable landmarks. The mountain is just under 400m in height (that's 1/4 of a mile) and is relatively easy to climb up. The view on the peak is phenomenal and one of a kind. You will get a fantastic glimpse of the Reykjanes Peninsula's volcanic landscape, which you can only witness at the peak of Keilir
The hiking trail is suitable for beginners.
